Hershey Bell has been named the founding dean of the Methodist University College of Medicine. University President Stanley T. Wearden announced Bell’s appointment on Thursday, according to a university news release.

To commemorate Fayetteville State University’s undergraduate Class of 2023, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin traveled from Washington to Fayetteville to deliver a commencement speech on Saturday urging graduates to serve others beyond their college years.

Campuses within Cumberland County Schools will soon have a new security system in place that tracks visitors entering and exiting school property. The county Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to award a contract to Raptor Technologies, a company that provides digital campus security to school districts. Eighth-grade STEM students at Seventy-First Classical Middle School launched rockets that they "made from scratch" on Wednesday afternoon in the back lawn of the main school building. The hands-on activity required the students to design and build their own rockets, according to a news release from Cumberland County Schools.

“It doesn’t matter how hard things get,” said Lucas Simmons, a sixth-grader at South View Middle School. “I’ve got to keep on going and not stop no matter how tough things are.” Lucas’ sentiment echoes that of hundreds of Cumberland County Schools students and parents who had the chance to hear former NFL player Keith Davis and former college football player Germard Reed during a two-day visit to local middle schools.

Samuel Aponte didn’t get the outcome he was hoping for last weekend when he competed in the National High School Coaches Association wrestling tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia. But he did come away with a pretty solid consolation prize, recognition as an All American wrestler.
