Trick or treat!

Even NICU babies were caught up in the spirit of Halloween on Tuesday.

The infants in the neonatal intensive care unit at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center were dressed in Halloween costumes provided by Preemies of the Carolinas.

Photos were posted on Cape Fear Valley Health's Facebook page.

The nonprofit organization was started in September 2015 by Jennifer Opferman, a Pittsburgh native who now lives in the Charlotte area, according to its website.

After her own period of hospitalization, Opferman wanted to give back and provide children in the hospital with something handmade to give comfort, the website says.

Preemies of the Carolinas made its first donation of preemie hats in  2015 to Novant Hemby Children’s Hospital.  It now provides hearts, hats and blankets to NICUs in 15 hospitals in North Carolina and South Carolina, the website says.
