The Cumberland County Board of Education will meet Tuesday evening to discuss excess land being given back to the county, review state student test results and approve student support programs.
The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Cumberland County Schools central services building, 2465 Gillespie St. The board will meet for the first time since the start of the 2023-24 school year Aug. 28.
Highlights of the agenda include:
Excess land
The board will look at giving excess land to Cumberland County for use as the location for a homeless shelter. The property, located at 225 B St., is adjacent to a Fayetteville Technical Community College education center.
Test scores review
The district’s curriculum committee will address the recently released N.C. Department of Public Instruction test results for Cumberland County. The system is still recovering from learning loss because of the COVID-19 pandemic but is making gains academically. District proficiency increased from 47.3% in 2021-22 to 49.3% in 2022-23, according to the test results.
School support approvals
The board is set to approve new tutoring services for students in grades three through 12 both virtually and in person. The companies selected to provide the services are FEV Tutor, University Instructors and Varsity Tutors. The project will cost just under $2 million.
The board will also approve a plan to award all beginning and international teachers a $300 stipend to help by supplies for their classrooms. The new program will have an annual cost of $125,700. This year, CCS welcomed 149 beginning teachers and 94 new international teachers.
In addition, the board is set to approve renewal of contracts for disability support services for students such as ASL interpreters, visual aids, and vocational rehabilitation services. These services will cost $775,800 and will serve about 318 students.
Other business
The board will consider appointments for the N.C. School Boards Association.
