The Alzheimer’s Association invites Cumberland County and area residents to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 28 at Segra Stadium, 460 Hay St.
Check-in opens at 9 a.m., with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and a walk start at 10:30 a.m., according to a news release.
“We’re closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s disease, but to get there, we need our community to join us in fighting for a different future,” said Lisa Roberts, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern North Carolina Chapter. “We encourage people to start or join a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease. Together, we will take steps toward treatments and fighting to end this disease.”
On walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused observance that signifies solidarity in the fight against the disease, the release said.
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, which is a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
In North Carolina alone, there are more than 180,000 people living with the disease and 369,000 caregivers, the release said.
