The Cumberland County Board of Education met Tuesday after a monthlong summer break to discuss the upcoming school year and plans for new and old buildings.

Superintendent Marvin Connelly Jr. opened the meeting by giving a recap of the summer learning programs offered by the district this year, calling them a “huge success.

The board discussed plans for the recently closed Lillian Black Elementary School in Spring Lake. The district plans to put the property up for sale to either Cumberland County or the town of Spring Lake. There is also a chance the property may be offered for sale to historic preservation nonprofit groups if they are interested. The building is over 85 years old.

The meeting then moved to the relocation of E.E Smith High School. Kevin Coleman, associate superintendent of auxiliary services, said two potential sites are being considered. One is across from Fort Liberty and near Stryker Golf Course. The other is off Murchison Road near Fort Liberty.

The board voted 7-2 in favor of the potential evaluation, with members Carrie Sutton and Judy Musgrave voting against the measure.

For the rest of the meeting, the board heard updates from different committees about some changes in policy for students and teachers.

Board members said they look forward to a successful school year, with most students returning to class in a little under three weeks.

“With the dedication of our premium professionals and the support of our entire community, we are confident that this school year will be a resounding success,” said Deanna Jones.
