FAYETTEVILLE CITY COUNCIL

Council to discuss Office of Community Safety, Market House renovations

Posted

The Fayetteville City Council will meet at 2 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

  • Office of Community Safety (OCS): The council will discuss the strategic direction for OCS, with the conversation facilitated by Dr. Gerard Tate from the newly established North Carolina State Office of Violence Prevention. The discussion comes amid rising tensions between council members about the purpose of the OCS and support for the initiative.
  • Market House: The council will hear a report on the city’s renovation project for the historic Market House in downtown Fayetteville. The city has received $1.5 million from the state for upgrades to the structure. The renovations will focus on pedestrian safety and accessibility improvements, such as the addition of a ramp and upgrades to surrounding crosswalks.
  • Wayfinding path system: The council will vote on whether or not to move forward with a plan for the design, purchase and installation of signs for a “wayfinding” system for Fayetteville’s Center City Parks and Trails and African American Heritage Trail. This wayfinding system aims to guide visitors through the city’s network of public trails, greenways, roadways, sidewalks, parks, plazas and urban areas.
  • Mazarick Park plan: The council will vote on whether or not to move forward with the design of a plan that would improve neighborhood connections to Mazarick Park. “Key recommendations include a multi-use path along the east side of Glenville Lake, a bridge to connect neighborhoods to the existing trails on the west side of the lake and priority improvements at Mazarick Park and other nearby city properties,” according to the council’s meeting materials.
  • Parks and Recreation: The council will hear an update on significant parks and recreation projects underway that are funded with the $35 million bond referendum voters approved in 2016. Projects to be discussed include: Senior Center East, Mazarick Tennis Center, Mable C. Smith Park, Cape Fear River Park, McArthur Sports Complex and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
  • Special use permit changes: The council will review staff’s recommendations for changes to its special use permit zoning regulations and requirements.
  • Council agenda item requests: Council members have individual requests for six items to appear on future meeting agendas. These include:
    • Council Member Derrick Thompson: private lake revitalization
    • Mayor Mitch Colvin: reentry requirement support
    • Council Member Deno Hondros: mandatory training for elected officials
    • Council Member Thompson: veteran service live event
    • Council Member Malik Davis: hiring a city attorney
    • Council Member Davis: demolition at 901 Person St.

The council meeting will be aired on Spectrum Cable Channel 7 and live-streamed at www.faytv.net
