Cape Fear Botanical Garden has received a Youth Growth Stock Trust Grant from United Way of Cumberland County to support intergenerational learning, exploration, creativity and an appreciation for nature, according to a news release.
The $9,350 in funding will support Gardenmania, in which families build a pinewood derby car and planter box. Additionally, children explore a miniature farm to learn how food is grown.
“We are really into food sustainability as well as the aesthetic of gardening,” said Sheila Hanrick, director of guests experiences for the garden. “We had a farm set up in the Heritage Garden, and we could educate people about gardening both for the attractiveness of it, down to agriculture and examples of growing their own food at home.”
