Black History Month: 2024 celebrations in Fayetteville

Black History Month is here, and with it comes an array of local events to celebrate the unique culture, history and achievements of Cumberland County’s Black community. Here’s a list of Black History Month events in Fayetteville this February:

Black History Month Bingo

  • Description: Cliffdale Regional Library will host a Black History Month-themed game of bingo. For more information about this program, call 910-483-7727 ext. 1383. Age group: 19+ years.
  • Time: 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7 
  • Location: 6882 Cliffdale Road, Fayetteville
  • Cost: Free

Legacy Loop Trolley

  • Description: “An educational tour focused on Black Fayetteville in the 1970s, curated in partnership with local historian and archivist, Nicholle Young St. Leone and led by Fayetteville State University Professor Charles Anderson.” Tours go for an hour.
  • Time: noon - 12:45 p.m | 1 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. | 2 p.m. - 2:45 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, 
  • Location: 222 Hay St., Fayetteville

Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Musical Journey Through Black History

  • Description: “This year's LEVAS concert will celebrate the Harlem Renaissance,” featuring the Fayetteville Jazz Orchestra. It will have performances from local artists, including Dr. Denise Murchison Payton, Monique Butler-McLeod and Brenda Vandervort-Miller (LEVAS founder), and popular performers including Joy Vandervort-Cobb, Corey Leak and James Clark Jr. “The show will be interactive and all who attend are encouraged to dress to celebrate this period in American history.”
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17 
  • Location: Seabrook Auditorium, Martin Luther King Drive, Fayetteville

Black History Month Presentation

  • Description: Hosted by the Cumberland County Chapter of Fayetteville State University Alumni, FSU’s local historian and archivist Nicholle Young St. Leone will give a presentation to commemorate Black History Month. 
  • Time: 2 p.m. - 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17 
  • Location: 3711 Village Drive, Fayetteville 
  • Cost: Free

Murchison Road's African American History

  • Description: Hosted by Headquarters Library, FSU professors Kelli Cardenas-Walsh and Charles Anderson will give a talk about the “long legacy of African-American history in Cumberland County.” For more information about this program, call 910-483-7727 ext. 1365.
  • Time: 10 a.m. - noon, Saturday, Feb. 17 
  • Location: 300 Maiden Lane, Fayetteville 
  • Cost: Free

Black History Trivia Night 

Description: West Regional Library presents a trivia night about Black history covering a range of subjects. First and second-place winners will receive a small prize. For more information about this program, call 910-483-7727 ext. 1481. Age group: 19+ years. 

  • Time: 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22 
  • Location: 7469 Century Circle, Fayetteville
  • Cost: Free

Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra: A Celebration of Love 

  • Description: A concert featuring selections of Black composers and artists in classical music, including Florence Price, Antonín Dvořák and more, performed by the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra String Quartet. 
  • Time: 6:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23 
  • Location: 1217 Murchison Road, Fayetteville
  • Cost: $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-18. Buy tickets here.

WSES Black History Month Show

  • Description: Hosted by Walker Spivey Elementary School, the Black History month show will feature a night of performances, speeches and soulful music, celebrating African American culture.
  • Time: 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23 
  • Location: 500 Fisher St., Fayetteville
  • Cost: $5, free for children under 3. Buy tickets here.

Talking Black in America: Performance Traditions

  • Description: Poetry-N-Motion LLC will host a screening of, “Talking Black in America: Performance Traditions,” a one-hour documentary about African American art forms and “the creative use of African American Language and its function as a tool for survival, liberation and belonging within the Black Community.” Before the screening, to-be-announced artists will perform for the audience. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with performers and moderated by local award-winning spoken word poet El'Ja Bowens.
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. - 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24 
  • Location: 301 Hay St., Fayetteville
